“I was so relieved when I learned about Beck’s Done in 1 service. I was 48 and I’d been wanting to create advanced directives for myself for several years but kept stalling. I was overwhelmed and not sure where to start. As a working class agender queer person, $99 was something I could actually afford and would bring me the peace of mind I needed: having my wishes respected should the worst thing happen. I worried that, without these documents, an estranged relative who respected neither me nor my wishes might have a say in my quality of life and quality of death. Less than a month after completing my medical directives and having those difficult but important conversations with my chosen family, I went to the emergency room with extreme abdominal pain, and as the doctors ordered more imaging, and then more imaging, a horrifying reality emerged: I had pancreatic cancer at age 48. It was an incredible comfort to be able to hand over my medical directives to both the admitting hospital and my primary care physician to ensure that my wishes for my life and my death would be respected by those who loved and cherished me the most.
